  1.                       LENS REPLACEMENT SCHEDULES

  3. Until recent years, contact lenses were 
  4. prescribed to patients and used by the 
  5. patient until they were broken, torn, 
  6. lost or deposited to the point they had 
  7. to be replaced.  With PMMA lenses this 
  8. could be as long as 10 to 20 years.

  10. With the introduction of hydrogel 
  11. lenses, they were easier to tear and 
  12. deposits that could not be removed 
  13. developed more rapidly.  One to 2 
  14. years was usually the useful life.

  16. Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are 
  17. more brittle than PMMA lenses and 
  18. usually do not last as long, commonly 
  19. 1 to 3 years.

  21. Lenses prescribed in this fashion are 
  22. commonly said to be worn on a 
  23. conventional replacement schedule.
